Dream away with this romantic gobelin. The tapestry was made according to the painting 'The Soul of the Rose' (1908) by the British painter John Williams Waterhouse (1849-1917).

'The Soul of the Rose' is a romantic, sensual representation of a woman in the garden. She is delicately recorded. The sultry, natural colors and organic forms are beautifully woven into the tapestry.

Waterhouse is often counted among the Pre-Raphaelites, but he was also a representative of the new age and was fully aware of the exciting artistic innovations in Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. Characteristic of his work are the melancholic scenes, in which female beauty plays a central role. With its colored, loaded images of women, Waterhouse received a great deal of appreciation in the British Empire and at the World Exhibitions in the 19th century. (Source: Groninger Museum).
