Patterns and colours

A colourful, geometric pattern in the Amsterdam School style, a famous motif of the Wiener Werkstätte or a dreamy Jugendstil pattern with natural colours: these are only a few examples of the many possibilities offered by Art Deco Web Store to customise a carpet to your personal wishes. There is a wide selection of the most beautiful patterns and it is also possible to choose between 300 stunning colours. A unique hand knotted or hand tufted carpet brings character into your home and creates atmosphere and warmth.

Made by hand

Before the carpet is ready to be placed in a home, it has to be created via a very intensive manufacturing process. After selecting the pattern, colours and size, the design, which is created with the help of one of De blauwe Deel’s experienced employees, is sent to the design team of the Dutch carpet specialist. They will forward the design to the design team in Nepal who will draw it on graph paper. Using the graph paper design, the amount of wool and/or silk required to make the carpet is dyed. When this is done, an average of 150,000 knots per m2 is knotted on a loom by hand. After all the knots are made, the carpet is washed to make sure that the piles are properly attached to one another. Lastly, the carpet is finished: the patterns are cut out precisely, the right pile length is realised and the edges are cut to have a straight line. Since all of this is done by hand, the creation of a carpet is a highly intensive process. The result is definitely impressive: a magnificent hand-knotted carpet created with attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Maintenance

After it has been produced in Nepal, which takes approximately 3 months, the carpet can be used. It is important to know the best way to maintain a carpet. Art Deco Web Store always includes a free underlay carpet in the delivery of a handmade carpet. This prevents it from sliding and protects the bottom of the carpet. In the case of stains, it is crucial to scoop up the excess moisture with a spoon and then dab the stain with a (lukewarm) tea towel until it disappears. Do not rub the stain because this will only press the dirt further into the pile. Finally, dry the carpet by dabbing it with a clean tea towel. Carpets are generally low in maintenance and it only needs to be vacuumed on a regular basis. At the same time, it still is possible to damage a carpet by just using it, for instance, when a small hole is accidentally burned into it with a cigarette. In these cases, it is nice to know that it is possible to have the carpet repaired.

Care & Fair

It is not uncommon that the labour-intensive process of knotted pile carpets gives rise to an important question, namely: was child labour involved in the making of the carpets? This is absolutely not the case. The carpet supplier with whom Art Deco Web Store cooperates is closely involved with the organisation Care & Fair that, among others, helps to fight child labour in the production of carpets in Nepal. By providing financial support, schools and clinics are built to improve the situation of the carpet knotters, their relatives and those who live around them.
