Spring is coming: the ideal moment to refresh your interior and give it an update. Wallpaper is the perfect way to immerse a room into a new atmosphere. In this blog entree we will pay attention to how to wallpaper a room.

Acrylic/Vinyl coated wallpaper or paper wallpaper?

The manner in which you paper your walls depends on the type of wallpaper that you have chosen. Art Deco Web Store has both acrylic/vinyl coated wallpaper as well as paper wallpaper in its collection. The most significant difference between these two types of wallpaper is that with acrylic/vinyl coated wallpaper you apply the wallpapering glue onto the walls and with paper wallpaper you apply it onto the wallpaper itself.

Preparation:

  • Make sure that the walls are clean, dry, smooth and well-prepared. Make sure to fill any holes and cracks as the surface needs to be completely smooth. Do not paint the walls first.
  • Walls that absorb easily can be covered with thrice-diluted, instant wallpaper adhesive or with a recommended primer sealer, according to the instructions of the manufacturer.

Tips for pasting process:

  • Only use instant glue for Acrylic / Vinyl Coated Wallpaper! It is available in every DIY-store.
  • Do NOT use an adhesive that is based on PVA or PVC. These types or glue are not suitable for our wallpaper and they can cause staining or adhesive issues.
  • Try to prevent glue coming through the seams of the wallpaper and it coming in contact with the printed front of the wallpaper.
  • Apply the glue onto the walls and not onto the wallpaper!
  • Use a felt roller to equally distribute the glue. Do not use too little or too much glue.

Tips to help hang the wallpaper:

  • Cut and glue the strips of wallpaper one at a time.
  • Check where the top and bottom of the pattern is, in other words, make sure you don’t glue it upside down.
  • Prevent wrinkling the paper by folding the strips.
  • Cut off the ends of the wallpaper with a sharp knife and a wallpaper ruler or with sharp wallpaper scissors.
  • Make sure that the seams connect but do not overlap each other.
  • Glue that does come out from between the seams should be wiped of immediately with a damp, clean and soft piece of cloth.
  • Acrylic / Vinyl coated wallpaper can be corrected when a strip is placed completely straight or when it does not connect seamlessly. Remove the strip and glue it on once again.

Step by step:

  1. Cut strips at the right size, make sure to include an extra 10 cm per strip. When the wallpaper has a repetitive pattern: include 10 cm plus the height of the pattern per strip. Place a plumb line on the wall with a level or plumb bob. Always start hanging the wallpaper within 50 cm of a corner or window.
  2. Thoroughly stir the glue and evenly apply this onto the wall.
  3. Immediately apply the strips of wallpaper to the wet glue.
  4. Evenly press the strips against the wall and smooth over them from the inside towards the outside and from the top towards the bottom with a wallpaper brush or a wallpaper spatula. Smooth over the seams with a seam roller.
  5. Cut off the excess wallpaper along the ceiling, skirting and windows with a sharp knife or sharp wallpaper scissors. A perfectly straight line is achieved with the help of a wallpaper ruler. Make sure to immediately dab paste stains with a damp piece of cloth.

  1. Cut strips at the right size, make sure to include an extra 10 cm per strip. When the wallpaper has a repetitive pattern: include 10 cm plus the height of the pattern per strip.
  2. Thoroughly stir the paste. Use a pasting table to help apply the adhesive on the strips of wallpaper. Make sure to go evenly brush from the inside towards the outside and do not forget the edges.
  3. Fold the strips of wallpaper and let them soak sufficiently. During the time it takes for them to soak, the strips will expand to their maximum width. When the strips are on the walls, they have the tendency to shrink. The paste will prevent any true shrinkage when it is strong enough. While the wallpaper is soaking up the glue, place a plumb line on the wall with a level or plumb bob. Always start hanging the wallpaper within 50 cm of a corner or window.
  4. Apply the strips of wallpaper by pressing them against the wall. The following strips must be pressed seamlessly against the others. Then you evenly smooth over them from the inside towards the outside and from the top towards the bottom with a wallpaper brush or a wallpaper spatula.
