Piet Mondrian and Bart van der Leck were the founding fathers of great innovations in the art of painting. Primary colours, horizontal and vertical lines were used to express a new awareness of art.

The book 'Piet Mondriaan & Bart van der Leck: Inventing a New Art, Laren 1916 - 1918' focuses on Piet Mondrian meeting Van der Leck and the exciting, artistic dialogue that was started after they had met each other in 1916.

Bart van der Leck came from a family skilled in the applied arts and he himself was practised in painting glass. After a piece of work that he created around 1914, Piet Mondrian became interested in the space that exists between the viewer and the painting and how that space can be brought to life by experiencing the painting. When the two artists met, they were surprised to find that they had the same fascinations. In the course of 1916 and 1917, a remarkable interaction came into existence where both artists benefitted from the contact. De Stijl was born. ‘Piet Mondriaan & Bart van der Leck: Inventing a New Art, Laren 1916 – 1918’ is the first book to meticulously document the creation of the magazine De Stijl, to which both artists contributed heavily. Another first is that it includes a technical report of the way in which Piet Mondrian and Bart van der Leck created their work
