Degas (1834-1917) was a French, impressionistic painter and sculptor.
He developed an interest for ballet from an early age and he created his first study of ballet dancers in 1872. His work avoids the true drama; the performance itself. The emotion after the performance, physically and mentally straining, is put centre stage.
